3 Simple Stretches For Long Car Rides and Desk Jobs…How to avoid the “Rest Stop Shuffle”

On the way back from Rebecca's home town in Missouri, we took the opportunity to film some unsuspecting fellow travelers doing the "Rest Stop Shuffle" and share a few of the stretches we do to "pay our tissue debt" from the hours of constrained sitting. 

Enjoy this "Rest Stop Recharge".  The simple stretches really do address the most important areas that lead to pain, stiffness, and unhealthy aging.  Heck…even if you're not on a road trip or sitting at a desk all day, they'll do you a world of good!

NOTE:  This is a quick and dirty series.  There are a TON of modifications we go through in the course to speed the pain relief and posture transformation process.

Crucial Core Stability Test – Can You BREATHE Like This?

When it comes down to it, the most important movement pattern you MUST master is BREATHING!

Nothing is more important.

I just had a discussion with a private client this morning about how you must always stay vigilant and aware when you slip into a shallow, stress breathing pattern.

Because if you don't "catch yourself" and "release and rewire" that pattern, it will get you.  It will eventually take you down.

Chronic hyperventilation that comes along with this short, chest based breathing pattern not only reduces the amount of available oxygen to your tissues, and creates excess stress and tension in your neck and shoulders, it also creates an alkaline environment in your blood.

Some people may think "alkaline's good, right?"

In your tissues, yes.  But when you're blood becomes even a tad alkaline from shallow breathing, your hemoglobin holds onto oxygen much more fiercely so your tissues don't get it!

That means not only are you not taking enough O2 in, you're also getting a double whammy from your hemoglobin's reluctance to give it up to you!

So make sure you master the art of breathing and I promise…everything will get better.  It has no choice.

Core Training Secrets From Prague – Part 2 “The Core of the Core”

The key concept from the new paradigm of posture and core training from Prague unfortunately kind of kicks Pilates in the teeth…YIKES!

Now don't get me wrong, I love Pilates for it's emphasis on "lengthening out" into good posture.  But in this video you'll learn the critical difference in the way you should switch on the "core of your core".

And it has nothing to do with "pulling your belly button to your spine"!

"Abdominal hollowing" as it's called, has actually been proven to take you OUT of good stability.

So try the self test in this short video (it's only about 2 and a half minutes) to see if YOU can properly activate the core of your core"!

As I've been watching my Mom go through her post brain surgery rehab, I've noticed something in the gym.

Everyone there has a head forward posture (imagine straining forward to look at your computer screen and you'll know exactly what
I mean).

You see, with stroke or other brain injuries or conditions, you're ability to maintain your fragile upright posture is lost.  Those pathways become inhibited.

As a matter of fact, my mentor and teacher, Dr. Vladimir Janda, from the Czech Rebublic, called some forms of bad posture "minimal brain dysfunction"!

And the word  FRAGILE is a very important word that you should take seriously.

Because even though you may not be suffering from an acute brain injury, ANY kind of stress you encounter can cause "minimal brain dysfunction" and destroy your upright posture.

And when it starts, you lose your ability to "recycle" gravity and use it for energy and spring!

Instead, gravity "gets you" and starts the downward and forward spiral into unhealthy aging.

Organic Posture Correction with the “Push Away Phenomenon”

One of the complaints I hear all the time when people talk about their posture is…

"It HURTS when I sit (or stand) up straight!

Well, that's because whenever you try to correct your posture, you're still using your own dysfunctional movement programs to correct it!

You have an inborn, perfect organic posture pattern inside you that merely needs to be awakened with the right INTENTION or imagery.

All you did when you were a baby to evolve into your upright posture is "push away from your support points". 

And now you just need to remember that and start the process of reprogramming your body for more efficient, strain free movement.

Barefooting for health

I get a lot of emails asking what I think of this shoe or that shoe to help with reducing stress in the body.

Today I got another one but it was about not wearing any shoes at all!

I am a very big proponent of going barefoot as much as humanly possible.  TONS of "input" or "afferance" comes in through your feet!

As a matter of fact, a standard treatment for Native Americans suffering with back pain was to run barefoot along a river bank.  The flood of input or "afferance" into the central nervous system blocked pain, relaxed tight muscles, and improved coordination to the brain!  (This is also how chiropractic adjustments work, btw)

So if you've stopped using your feet the way they were designed in have buried them in leather coffins your whole life, guess what?

You're going to develop a "sleeping foot", or even a "dead foot" that has a real hard time interpreting the terrain underneath you and you're going to have a lot of trouble with your knees, hips, back, and even all the way up to your neck and shoulders!

So here's my response to the email I received and the videos about barefoot running which are all excellent!

"The videos are very good.  i believe whole heartedly in being barefoot.  I do it mostly

in the garden but would definitely use a barefoot shoe or the vibram 5 fingers.

The coaching the guy did in the vimeo vid was good but, of course, I would teach
about maintaining intra-abdominal pressure so you could maximize the rebound force
or "elasticity" as he called it.

Thanks for the forward.  I've had others asking me about the same thing.
